Put core infrastructure back on Manitoba’s priority list: MHCA

MHCA launches election campaign advocacy

If you don’t like the condition of your roads, tell your provincial election candidates to make infrastructure a priority again. That’s the gist of the message that launched the MHCA’s advocacy campaign, which will carry through to the September provincial election.

“Our advocacy aims to ensure all parties, all candidates for provincial office understand the critical role that core infrastructure and strategic investment in core infrastructure play in the economy,” MHCA President Chris Lorenc said.

“We need all politicians and office holders to commit to returning infrastructure to a top provincial priority with good asset-management plans and multi-year budgeting that reflect that priority.”

In brief:

  • The highways capital budget since 2016, the last provincial election, has been slashed to $350 million – in 2015-16, the actual budget expenditures reached $628 million.
  • MHCA’s advocacy campaign leading to the fall election will use Twitter daily, and in partnership with Merit Contractors through radio advertising and billboards closer to fall.
  • Party leaders will be sent a Q&A to ask what role infrastructure investment will play in their economic growth plan, should they form government

“We are asking all our members to help get the message out – strategic investment in core infrastructure enables trade, and is huge contributor to economic growth. No other provincial program has seen budget cuts of more than 40%, as our industry has weathered,” Lorenc noted.
