MHCA to CCA: provincial highways budget, carbon tax top agenda in Manitoba

Severe cuts to the provincial highways budget and the planned federal carbon tax, to raise the price of fuel at the pump in April, remain among the top priorities in Manitoba in 2019, the MHCA’s update to the Canadian Construction Association annual meeting lays out.

“This (highways budget) is by far the single most important issue our industry faces in Manitoba,” the MHCA report states. “(There are) a number of key questions to which we do not have answers.”

On the carbon tax file, the MHCA notes it is encouraging the CCA to coordinate a national response with the heavy construction associations across provinces. The heavy construction industry is in a bind in the push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions due to the fact that, as yet, there is no workable option to the heavy-duty diesel engines the construction vehicles and equipment rely upon.

The full report can be read here. The CCA annual meeting takes place March 25-28.
