The MHCA and Merit Manitoba are working together again to put core infrastructure investment on the public radar, this time for the provincial election campaign.
Social media ads began running last week on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, encouraging voters to talk to their provincial candidates about the condition of our roads. The highways capital budget has been slashed since 2016, falling from $540 million in 2016/17 to $350 million in both 2018 and this year.
“This is the time voters get to hold their political parties, MLAs and also candidates hoping to sit in the legislature accountable for their records or positions on core infrastructure,” MHCA President Chris Lorenc said.
Lorenc noted some party announcements have been encouraging, but there has to be more discussion on the campaign trail about the economic critical role tha core infrastructure – highways, bridges sewer and water and water-control structures – plays in Manitoba.
“Core infrastructure moves people to jobs and products to market, and it ensures Manitoba communities can protect themselves from extreme weather events, such as sudden deluges of rain. It deserves to be a higher priority of all parties that are asking Manitobans for the right to lead.”
Radio ads will begin the nine days the election campaign as well, running on 10 stations at rush-hour times.
“We know governments pay attention to our public messages,” Lorenc said. “This effort helps put the public’s top priority – fixing our roads – at the front of the party leaders’ minds when they are out talking to Manitobans leading up to September 6.”
